The Swiss violinist, contemporary musician and ECM artist Paul Giger was born in Herisau in the Alpstein. Having studied in Winterthur and Bern he was Concertmaster of the St Gallen Symphony Orchestra for three years. Since 1983 Paul has worked as a soloist playing performing Baroque, contemporary classical music, free improvisation, jazz, and folk. He has worked with Jan Garbarek, the Hilliard Ensemble, Pierre Favre, Marie-Louise Dähler, Pudi Lehmann and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir.
Six of his albums including ‘Chartres’ have been released on ECM, with his latest album ‘Trans Limen, ad Lumen’ with the Hilliard Ensemble on the Divox record label. Paul was the subject of the award-winning film ‘Karma Shadub’ by Ramon Giger in 2013. Paul performed in the UK for the first time in 2017 with former members of the Hilliard Ensemble which was followed up by a choral tour in Oxford, Cambridge and Romsey Abbey in 2018 with the vOx Chamber Choir and the countertenor David James.
